As a member of the Domestic Violence Inter-Agency Training Strategy Group, Women's Aid Advice Centre facilitates Domestic Violence Awareness Training throughout Nottinghamshire.

What is the Domestic Violence Inter-Agency Training Strategy Group?

The Nottinghamshire Domestic Violence Forum Training Strategy Group formed in 1999 in response to the demand for consistent and comprehensive Domestic Violence Awareness Training. A training programme was developed in line with National Guidelines on domestic Violence work with women, children and men.

WAAC have an accredited countywide pool of trainers who provide specialist knowledge and skills in a range of domestic violence related issues, for example, health, education, housing, supporting women, protecting children, challenging men, policy reviews and project development.

What does the training involve?

The training programme is designed to enable representitives from a broad range of organisations develop more effective ways of working together to challenge men's use of domestic abuse and to safeguard women and children.

The Training programme can be adapted to a series of full or half day sessions and can, through negotiation be designed to meet the specific needs of your organisation.

The training programme currently has four modules.

  1. Domestic Violence Awareness - This session explores the different aspects of domestic abuse and its causes, the myths and stereotypes, the reasons why women stay in or return to abusive relationships, the impact on women and children and the links between domestic abuse and child abuse.
  2. Good Practice Guidelines for Supporting Women and Children Experiencing Domestic Violence - This session enables participants to identify, develop and implement communication and support skills, such as asking women and children about the presence of domestic abuse and safety planning with women and children
  3. Why Men Perpetrate Violence Against Women - This session assists participants to gain a greater understanding about why men perpetrate domestic abuse by assessing the various theories for its causes. The session identifies the link between men's beliefs and their behaviour and helps participants to recognise when domestic abuse is occuring.
  4. Good Practice Guidelines for Work with Men who Perpetrate Domestic Violence against Women - This session looks at how men use children to control women, examines the risks attached to confidentiality and collusion, explores appropriate ways to respond to men who use domestic abuse against women, and assists participants to review thier policies and practices and develop closer inter - agency links.
