About Us

Women's Aid Advice Centre was established in 1979 and is a free, confidential and independent service run by women for women and their children experiencing or escaping domestic abuse. Our aims are:

  • To support women and their children or dependants who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse.
  • To raise awareness about domestic abuse and its affects on women and children.
  • To work with relevant statutory and voluntary agencies to improve their policies and practice responses to women and children experiencing domestic abuse.

We provide the following services:

  • a freephone 24 hour Domestic Violence Helpline and a drop-in facility which is open between 10.00am-4.00pm Monday to Friday. Through this service we offer advice, information and support to women and agencies working with women on issues such as housing, immigration, child protection and child contact, civil and criminal remedies, welfare rights, health. We also arrange referrals to refuge or other safe accommodation, refer women to specialist agencies and accompany women to appointments with agencies.
  • a Floating Support Service to women (and women with children) in their own homes in Nottingham City
  • an Outreach Support Service to women (and women with children) in their own homes in the Gedling area
  • Domestic Abuse Awareness Training to statutory and voluntary sector agencies throughout the county.
  • in partnership with the Workers Education Association, WAAC provides accredited training courses for women survivors.
  • representation on various panels and inter-agency forums.

Women's Aid believes in empowering women. This means that we will believe what a woman says, take her seriously, let her know what her options are and let her make her own decisions, even if that is to do nothing. We will respect and support her in whatever decision she chooses. We are committed to equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice in all our work and services.

Women's Aid Advice Centre is based in Nottingham Women's Centre on Chaucer Street, near the city centre. We are a company limited by guarantee, a registered charity with approved Quality Mark status. We are a member of Women's Aid Federation of England and Telephone Helplines Association .

Our workers, paid and unpaid, have a commitment to working collectively. Currently the team consists of two Co-ordinators, a Trainer, two helpline workers, a Finance/Administration worker, an Admin Assistant, a team of seven Out of Hours workers, three floating support workers for Nottingham City, Outreach Worker for Gedling (in Nottinghamshire), an Outreach Worker for Travellers and Sex Workers and a pool of Volunteers. There is a Management Committee which takes responsibility for longer term and developmental issues and a multi agency Advisory Group.
